Bamboo– Sustainably Sourced and Ecologically Practical
Bamboo has always been valued for its many utilitarian resource, particularly in Asian countries, where the plant was and is still used in the building of structures, consumption of food, and creation of other products. But recent developments in technology have allowed bamboo to enter the textile fiber arena playing a number of roles. Clothing that comes from the bamboo plant can either be made 100% from the plant, or blended with other fibers. It is often paired with hemp and cotton during the production process. Bamboo is one of most sustainable clothing sources we have on the planet today. Bamboo grows very quickly; a specimen in Japan is cited as having grown over a foot in one day. The bamboo plant can also grow in a variety of climates, humidity levels, and altitudes.
Bamboo is like a grass and can be harvested without any harm done to the plant. Unlike trees, no replanting is necessary after harvesting. The high growth rate of bamboo and the fact that bamboo can grow in such diverse climates make the bamboo plant a sustainable and versatile resource. It uses less water than cotton and does not have to be grown using pesticides.
Like Bamboo, hemp is one of the fastest growing biomasses that the world has ever seen. It is believed to have been used to create some of the oldest cloths in existence. But Adam and Eve never had it so good, because today, hemp is used to create some incredible outfits and clothing accessories.
Hemp could almost be called the Bamboo of the West, for it’s had many uses ever since it’s domestication. Today, hemp is used in the production of many different things including paper, clothing, plastics, construction, and health food. It takes hardly any pesticides or herbicides to safely grow hemp, making it an ideal plant for mass production. It is often blended with bamboo and cotton to make durable and long-lasting clothing. Clothing accessories made from hemp are very strong thanks to the “bast”– or strong cord– that the plant produces which is used with clothing.
